The honest maths

Repair your engine or buy a used one? Read this first.

When an engine fails, someone will always suggest a used engine from a breaker. It sounds cheap and it sounds quick. After 45 years of repairing the engines those decisions produce, we think you deserve the full picture before you spend a penny.

The problem with an unknown history

A used engine is, by definition, an engine someone else stopped wanting. Sometimes that is innocent. The donor car was crashed or written off for reasons that had nothing to do with the engine. But you have no way to know. You cannot see whether the oil was changed on time, whether the timing chain rattled for a year before the crash, or whether the turbo was already whistling its last. The breaker cannot tell you either, because they never ran the engine long enough to find out. You are buying a sealed box of someone else’s maintenance habits.

The engines that worry us most are the ones with known weaknesses. A used Ford EcoBoost with an unknown wet belt history is a gamble on the exact failure that killed your original engine. A used BMW N47 with an unknown chain history is the same bet with a different badge. When the failure mode is age and wear, a used engine of the same age is not a cure. It is a rerun.

The double labour trap

Here is the part nobody mentions when they quote you for a used engine. The labour to remove your old engine and fit the replacement is the expensive part, often eight to fifteen hours at garage rates. If the used engine turns out to be faulty, and a meaningful number of them do, you pay that labour again to take it out. Then you pay it a third time to fit whatever comes next. The cheap engine has now cost you two or three rounds of labour, weeks off the road and a considerable amount of patience, and you still do not have a working car.

The warranty on a used engine usually covers the part only, for thirty to ninety days, and specifically excludes labour. Read the small print before you buy. The warranty on our rebuilds covers the work for 12 months and transfers to the next keeper if you sell the vehicle. Those two documents are not the same product at all.

The used engine gamble

  • Unknown service history and no way to verify how the engine was treated
  • No meaningful warranty, often thirty days on the part only and never the labour
  • You pay the fitting labour twice if the used engine turns out to be faulty
  • Hidden wear on chains, belts, bearings and turbos that only shows after fitting
  • No documentation to support the vehicle’s resale value

The documented rebuild

  • You keep the engine whose history you already know
  • Every worn part replaced with OEM components and photographed for your records
  • Video inspection of the dismantled engine before you approve the quote
  • Test certified before refitting, with a 12 month warranty
  • The warranty transfers to the next keeper, adding real resale value

What your own engine gives you that a used one cannot

Your engine has a history you already know. You know how it was driven, how it was serviced and what killed it. When we rebuild it, you also get proof of its future. The video inspection shows you the failure. The photographic rebuild report shows you every new OEM part. The test certification shows you the finished engine performing as it should. That documentation is worth real money when you sell, because a buyer can see exactly what was done and the transferable warranty means the cover survives the sale.

Fully repaired after failure starts from £2,495. Compare that honestly with the true cost of the used engine route. Add the engine, the labour, the fluids, the parts the used engine still needs, and the risk of paying the labour twice. The gap is usually far smaller than the first quote suggested, and the rebuild comes with proof instead of hope.

When a used engine might make sense

We said this would be honest, so here is the exception. If your engine is damaged beyond economic repair, which happens when a block is cracked or a crankcase is holed, a replacement engine is the only route. Even then, we would rather supply and rebuild the replacement before it goes in, so you receive it with new chains, belts, bearings and gaskets and a warranty that means something. Repair rather than unnecessarily replace is our principle, but when replacement is genuinely necessary, do it with your eyes open and the paperwork to match.

If you are staring at this decision right now, call and talk it through. Describe the failure and we will give you a straight view of both routes for your specific vehicle. You can also read about the rebuild process, check prices or browse the engines we repair every week.

The video of my stripped engine showed exactly why it failed. The rebuild was finished in a week and the car has been perfect since.

My Transit is my living. They collected it from my depot, rebuilt the EcoBlue and had me back working inside ten days.

Two garages told me to scrap the car or fit a used engine. Engine Repairs rebuilt it properly and the warranty transferred when I sold it.
